This year, more than 200 smoke detectors were presented to Captain Mike Haas of the Akron Fire Prevention Inspector Bureau and other officers of the Akron, Ohio Fire Department including Chief Clarence Tucker on Thursday June 4th, 2020. The smoke detectors were delivered by Aaron Wright, Mike Freeman and Abram Bruner, business representatives of the Indiana/Kentucky/Ohio Regional Council of Carpenters. The presentation was made at the newly constructed Akron Fire Station 4 on 25 E. Thorton Street.
This station was built 100 percent by union labor with Thomarios of Copley, Ohio the general contractor, Extreme Elements of Akron, Ohio the concrete contractor, USA Roofing, Lou Ritenour of Twinsburg, Ohio on flooring and L&M Construction of St. Clairsville, Ohio providing interiors and finishing.
According to the most recent statistics, nearly every fatal house fire in Akron during the past seven years occurred in a home without a functioning fire alarm. A recent survey of Akron residents found that only half who responded had inadequate smoke alarm protection, often due to financial constraints. Early intervention of these tragedies motivated the Member Action Committee to take action to change those statistics. To date, the carpenters and millwrights have donated over 400 smoke detectors to the Akron Fire Department.
Due to their strong relationship and continued donations to the Akron Fire Department, Captain Haas presented the IKORCC representatives with a plaque of appreciation.
The committee plans to continue donating smoke detectors next year.
